The punishment for leaving Islam is death. How is it that the true religion of God, which is upon the absolute haqq needs to murder people for leaving it?
UPDATE: I have received over 20 death threats/incitements to murder/saying i deserve to die or I should die or I would be killed on my Facebook now. So whatever you think the Islamic law is, obviously many Muslims do consider it to be a real ruling. However, Muslims in my community did not respond this way.
Some people will argue that the original reason for this law is to deal with treason, because the state and religion were intertwined, but the problem is the majority of these evidences don’t mention treason.
Converts should be warned before accepting Islam that they can be killed if they leave the religion. Converting is a final decision, similar to a tattoo. Muslim kids don’t get this choice though.
There was probably a good reason why Islam teaches executing the apostate. The story goes that there was a bunch of Jews that became Muslim and then left Islam, in order to give Islam a bad name. This is because they were considered to be civilized and educated by the Arabs, and by doing this they would be able to destabilize the Muslim community.
The list of quotes is so numerous, I won’t mention them all, but here are the links:
- Nasai 37:83, Nasai 37:93, Nasai 37:54 , AbuDawud 40:3, Abu Dawud 40:2, Ibn Majah Hadith 2534, Ibn Majah 2533, Muslim 28:36, Bulugh al-Maram 1242, Bulugh al-Maram 1199, Bulug al-Maram 1241
As well, Abu Bakr understood that anyone who abandoned een one of the pillars of Islam, (i.e. the zakah) should be fought.
It was narrated that Anas bin Malik said:
“When the Messenger of Allah [SAW] died, the ‘Arabs apostatized, so ‘Umar said: ‘O Abu Bakr, how can you fight the ‘Arabs?’ Abu Bakr said: ‘The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: “I have been commanded to fight the people until they bear witness to La ilaha illallah (there is none worthy of worship except Allah) and that I am the Messenger of Allah, and they establish Salah and pay Zakah.” By Allah, if they withhold from me a young goat that they used to give to the Messenger of Allah [SAW], I will fight them for it.’ ‘Umar said: ‘By Allah, as soon as I realized how certain Abu Bakr was, I knew that it was the truth.'” (Nasai
Does this even matter? We don’t live in an Islamic state right? Yes it does matter. It matters because for one, people are working to establish the Islamic state again. Is this the type of world you want to live in? Where you don’t have freedom to choose what to worship?
Islam is a one way choice, and it seems that calling it the “fastest growing religion in the world” is unfair because once you join, you can’t leave. Let me ask you, if this religion is the truth, why does it need to use threats of violence and death in order to keep people in its group?
Also this local Imam in Toronto said the same thing here:
Actual Executions During Life of Prophet Muhammad
Narrated Abi Musa Al-Ash’ari: “That the Prophet [SAW] sent him to Yemen, then he sent Mu’adh bin Jabal after that. When he arrived he said: ‘O people, I am the envoy of the Messenger of Allah [SAW] to you.’ Abu Musa gave him a cushion to sit down, then a man was brought who had been a Jew, then he became a Muslim, then he reverted to Kufr. Mu’adh said: ‘I will not sit down until he is killed; this is the decree of Allah and His Messenger,’ (saying it) three times. When he was killed, he sat down.” (Sunan an-Nasa’i 4066)
On the day when Mecca was conquered, the Messenger of Allah (SAW) gave protection to the People except four men and two women and he named them. Ibn Abu Sarh was one of them and he hid himself with Uthman ibn Affan. When the Messenger of Allah (SAW) called the people to take the oath of allegiance, Uthman brought him and made him stand before the Messenger of Allah (SAW). He said: Messenger of Allah, receive the oath of allegiance from him. He raised his head and looked at him thrice, denying him every time. After the third time he accepted his oath of allegiance. He then turned to his Companions and said: Is not there any intelligent man among you who would stand to this (man) when he saw me desisting from receiving the oath of allegiance, and kill him? They replied: We do not know, Messenger of Allah, what lies in your heart; did you not give us an hint with your eye? He said: It is not proper for a Prophet to have a treacherous eye. (Sunan Abi Dawud 2683, Classed Sahih by Albani)
On the occasion of Battle of Uhud (when Muslims had to retreat) a woman became apostate. On this the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: `Ask her to repent and if she does not repent, kill her.` (Baihaqi). ” 1. Amr ibn al-As, the governor of Egypt, wrote to Umar that a man accepted Islam, then became a kafir, then accepted Islam and then became a kafir. He committed this act several times. Now should his Islam be accepted or not? Umar replied: As long as God has accepted his Islam, you too should do so. Offer him Islam. If he accepts it, leave him alone. Otherwise execute him. (Kanz al-‘Ummal) 2. Saad ibn Abi Waqqas and Abu Musa Ashari sent a messenger to Umar after the Battle of Tustar. The messenger presented a report of the events to Umar. Finally Umar asked: Did anything unusual happen? He said: Yes, Leader of the Faithful. We caught an Arab who had become a kafir after accepting Islam. Umar asked: Then what did you do with him? He said: We killed him. At that, Umar said: Why did you not confine him to a room, put a lock on the door, keep him there for three days and daily throw him a loaf of bread? Perhaps during that time he may have repented. O God! This act did not take place at my command or in my presence; nor after hearing about it am I pleased with it. Nevertheless Umar enquired no further about the matter from Sad and Abu Musa Ashari, nor did he plan to punish them.[Tahawi, Kitab al-Siyar, Bahth Is titabat al-Murtadd; also Bayhaqi, Muwatta; al-Shafi’i, Kitab al-Umm} This proves that the action of Sad and Abu Musa was indeed within the limits of the law, but that in Umar’s opinion it would have been much better to have given the person an opportunity to repent before killing him.
Some men who were spreading the false claim of Musaylimah were captured in Kufah. Uthman was informed in writing about it. He wrote in response that they be proffered Islam and the confession: “There is no god except God and Muhammad is the Messenger of God”. Whoever accepts it and reveals his rejection of Musaylimah should be released. Whoever upholds the religion of Musaylimah should be executed. (Tahawi)
A man who was formerly a Christian, then was Muslim, and again became a Christian was brought before Ali. Ali asked him: What is the cause of your conduct? He replied: I have found the religion of the Christians better than your religion. Ali asked: What is your belief about Jesus? He said: He is my Lord (Rabb); or else he said: He is Lord of Ali. Hearing this, Ali ordered that he be executed. (Tahawi)
Ali was informed about a group of Christians who had become Muslims and then became Christians again. Ali arrested them, summoned them before himself and enquired about the truth of the matter. They said: We were Christians. Then we were offered the choice of remaining Christians or becoming Muslims. We chose Islam. But now it is our opinion that no religion is more excellent than our first religion. Therefore we have become Christians now. Hearing this, Ali ordered these people to be executed. (Tahawi)
Ali was informed that some people regarded him as their Lord (Rabb). He called them and asked: What do you say? They said: You are our Lord, our Creator and Sustainer. Ali said: You are in a sad situation. I am a servant like you. Like you I eat and drink. If I obey God, He rewards me. If I disobey Him, I fear He will punish me. Therefore fear God and abandon your confession. But they refused. The next day Qanbar came and reported the people were saying the same thing. He called them, and on enquiring about the matter, they repeated the same things. The third day Ali called and threatened them: If you say the same thing, I will kill you in a most terrible manner. Still they remained adamant in their opinion. Finally Ali had a pit prepared and a fire burning in it. Then he said: Look, stop this confession immediately. Otherwise I will throw you into this pit. But they persisted in their affirmation. Then at Ali’s command all of them were thrown into the pit. (Fath al Bari)”
