While you read this, imagine what Aisha would have got if Muhammad never was born in Arabia. Imagine a woman like Khadijah or Hind the wife of Abu Sufyan. And compare that to the life Muhammad’s favorite child bride received.
Aisha was married as a child. Some people debate her age, but she was a child when she was married. The hadith says that she was playing with her dolls when they took her away from her parents and she moved in with Muhammad.
When this child marriage was arranged, Muhammad was 49. She was probably 6, and at best, lets say 12 (although multiple hadith claim she was much younger).
So she had to share her husband with 8 other women. This means she only got to spend 1 night with him less than once a week. She had to constantly worry about Muhammad getting married to other women as when a lady would catch his eye (like Zainab or Juwayriyah) he would get her.
‘A’ishah describes her saying, “She was a pleasant woman. No one saw her except he became captivated by her. While the Messenger of Allah was there suddenly Juwayriyah (RA) entered asking him concerning her ransom agreement (with Thabit). By Allah, as soon as I saw her, I disliked her entering the place of Messenger of Allah for I knew that he would see what I saw in her. (Alfred Guillaume, The Life of Muhammad: A Translation of Ibn Ishaq’s Sirat Rasul Allah, p. 490-493.)
The Quran mentions that Muhammad’s wives got angry at him and he stayed away from them for one month and “Allah” came to his rescue threatening to get rid of all of them and replace them with better women. Must be nice having the creator of the universe intervene for you in your marital disputes.
O Prophet, say to your wives, “If you should desire the worldly life and its adornment, then come, I will provide for you and give you a gracious release. O wives of the Prophet, whoever of you should commit a clear immorality – for her the punishment would be doubled two fold, and ever is that, for Allah , easy. And whoever of you devoutly obeys Allah and His Messenger and does righteousness – We will give her her reward twice; and We have prepared for her a noble provision. (Quran 33:28-29)
After all this, she is widowed at the age of 18. When Muhammad died, she was 18. A woman’s prime of her sexuality is in her 20s to 30s. She had to live the rest of her life single, with no halal sexual outlet for her desires.
When she reunites with Muhammad in paradise, she will have to share him with tens (if not hundreds) of other women including Muhammad boasting he would marry Mary the mother of Jesus and Asiya the wife of Firaun.
If this setup was not abuse, what is it?
